CUbiC Student Researcher Shantanu Bala develops sensing technology for visually, hearing impaired

Shantanu Bala, an undergraduate double major in psychology and computer science, has worked with ASU’s Center for Cognitive Ubiquitous Computing (CUbiC) for six years on a haptic glove project that helps people with hearing or visual disabilities with situational context. A camera captures the facial movements and the information is transferred to the glove which provides different sensations based on what the camera captures and the chosen mapping between the visual and haptic modality. Working on these devices helped Bala to win the prestigious Thiel Fellowship, a program that provides finances, resources and mentors for its fellows to accomplish their projects. During his two-year Thiel Fellowship, Bala will be working on developing these research projects’ devices into patentable devices or products to be sold in stores.
